Best Historical Album of the Year Nominee:

Beyoncé is up for Album of the Year with Cowboy Carter, becoming the first Black woman to gain this country-album nomination. This is the first time any Black artist has received this Album of the Year nomination in country music. The last such nomination was for Ray Charles back in 1962 for Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music.

Only three Black women have ever taken the top prize: Natalie Cole for *Unforgettable. with Love* in 1992, Whitney Houston for *The Bodyguard Soundtrack* in 1994, and Lauryn Hill for *The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill* in 1999. Beyoncé entered the contest four times previously for *I Am. Sasha Fierce*, *Beyoncé*, *Lemonade*, and *Renaissance*, but she finally got her hands on the prize this time.

Breaking Down Barriers: Country and American Roots Music

Beyoncé’s win in the categories of Country and American Roots becomes historic, becoming the first black woman to gain Grammy nominations within these genres. To date, no black woman has ever been able to garner a Grammy from a country song.
The depth of these nominations is further brought out by historical setbacks in this genre. In 2016, Beyoncé submitted *Daddy Lessons* for country music consideration, where the Recording Academy’s country committee rejected it. Until that point, she preceded Tina Turner’s 1975 album, *Tina Turns the Country On! *, which had been nominated in Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
In 2021, Mickey Guyton became the first Black woman to be nominated in a category under country music for *Black Like Me*.
Even if Beyoncé doesn’t win in these categories, her nominations mark a turning point in country and roots music representation.
