Donald Trump Meets with Republicans in Florida as Cabinet Confirmations Continue: Key Updates

Former President Donald Trump is in Miami, speaking to House Republicans at his golf club during their GOP retreat. The three-day event is intended to address internal party divisions and discuss critical issues, including immigration and federal spending.
Immigration and border security are prominent topics at the retreat. The White House recently announced a significant policy shift, deciding against implementing broad tariffs and sanctions on Colombia. This decision followed an agreement with Colombian President Gustavo Petro, allowing U.S. military aircraft to deport Colombian migrants.

Cabinet Confirmation Push

Trump pushes all his Cabinet nominees this week. The Senate is expected to confirm Scott Bessent as Treasury secretary in a bipartisan vote on Monday and Sean Duffy as transportation secretary on Tuesday.
But the focus will shift in later parts of the week to contentious nominees as Tulsi Gabbard, RFK Jr., and Kash Patel go in front of committees seeking their confirmation hearings.

Monday Agenda

President Trump will speak to House Republicans Monday afternoon during the retreat. The powwow is aimed at helping heal internal party schisms and prepare the group for Trump’s sweeping tax-cut plans and federal budget initiatives.
In his 2024 campaign, Trump promised tax cuts of $6 trillion over the next ten years. Keeping the 2017 tax cuts, which are set to lapse this year, would cost another $4 trillion. Other measures, including a plan to do away with taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security benefits, would raise the price to $1.8 trillion.
To balance these expenses, Trump has floated a 10% tariff on imported goods that could raise $1.9 trillion. Still, some conservatives in Congress don’t like it, and such opposition may not only jeopardize the measure but also cause rifts within the party.

Republican Unity Is the Key to Legislative Agenda

With a slight 218-215 majority in the House, Republicans need to stick together to push forward Trump’s tax and spending legislation without any Democrat support.

Cabinet Confirmations Thus Far Four of Trump's Cabinet appointees have been confirmed thus far:

– Secretary of State Marco Rubio: Confirmed 99-0 in a rare unanimous vote.

– Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth: Confirmed 51-50, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote despite allegations of misconduct.

– Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem: Approved 59-34, with support from seven Democrats.

– CIA Director John Ratcliffe: Confirmed 74-25 with bipartisan support.

President Trump continues his push to strengthen his Cabinet and unite the party to pass his legislative agenda while rallying House Republicans in Miami today. Stay tuned for live coverage throughout the week.
